WHAT'S NEW

Low Flow Toilets and Other Water Conservation Measures:

The City of London has recently approved an expanded water conservation program that will help residents and businesses further decrease their daily water use and help save water for future generations and limit the need for costly water treatment plant expansions.

During the 1920’s when London elected to go to a full municipal system for drinking water, the decision was made to install water meters in every home and business. This is something we take for granted in London as many other municipalities are currently spending millions of dollars to retrofit existing homes with water meters. We also have inclining block rates that charge homeowners based on the amount of water they use. These rates promote conservation with lower bills when you use less tap water.

The new expanded program is being targeted for a January 1st, 2011 start. Significant work is required to set-up rebate and audit programs using existing resources and homeowners should watch the City of London website for updates over the course of the year. Some of the program elements being considered for implementation are:
  • Rebates for homeowners that install low flow toilets, low flow fixtures, or front loading washing machines;

  • Outdoor audits to help homeowners and businesses landscape using materials that don’t need to be watered by a hose;

  • Leak detection programs on municipal watermain pipes;

  • An expanded education program that promotes the responsible use of tap water.

Ontario's microFIT - Guaranteed Return on Investment for Solar PV
If you are thinking about solar PV panels or a rooftop wind turbine for your home, Ontario’s microFIT Program provides a streamlined way for you to connect and receive payment for the electricity you produce and send to the province’s electricity distribution system (i.e., "the grid").

Projects eligible for the microFIT Program will receive a long-term contract for the payment of electricity produced from the renewable energy project, and a fixed price for the full term of the contract. Solar panels will receive 80.2 cents for every kilowatt-hour (kWh) sold to the grid, while wind turbines receive 13.5 cents for every kWh sold to the grid.

For more information, visit the London Hydro and the Ontario Power Authority websites.

ecoENERGY– Retrofit Homes Grants Increase by 25 Percent – Limited Time Offer
Canadian homeowners are being urged to act now to take advantage of a new opportunity to save money on home energy retrofits. The grants under the ecoENERGY– Retrofit Homes program will increase by 25 percent. This will be matched dollar-for-dollar by the Ontario Home Energy Retrofit Program. With the 25 percent increase in grants, the program will cover a larger share of the cost incurred by homeowners who carry out retrofits that improve energy efficiency. For example, the eligible grant for a high-efficiency gas furnace will increase to $1,250 from $1,000.

Homeowner who retrofit their homes to make them more energy efficient could also qualify for the Government of Canada’s new Home Renovation Tax Credit, worth up to $1,350.

To qualify, homeowners must first have a pre-retrofit energy evaluation by a certified evaluator and a post evaluation following the renovations. Funds are available for a limited time (to March 31, 2011) and are subject to availability. Homeowners are encouraged to apply early.

The program highlights new government incentives, provides detailed information on solar technologies and what homeowners need to know to make their purchase.  Go Solar hosts events with trained representatives for the public to learn more, and has an online Hot Stuff contest with solar prizes.  Details are online at www.gosolarontario.ca or call 1-866-922-2896.

Government of Ontario doubles the incentive for Home Energy Retrofits

To help homeowners save energy, save money and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the Ontario government has created the Ontario Home Energy Retrofit Program. The program complementing the Government of Canada’s ecoENERGY Retrofit Program by matching dollar for dollar the incentives offered by the ecoEnergy Retrofit Program. This doubles the potential retrofit incentives from a maximum of $5,000 to a maximum of $10,000.  In addition, the Government of Ontario will pay up to $150 to cover the cost of the audit.

These incentives can also be used in combination with other incentive programs, such as the Ontario Power Authority’s Cool Savings Rebate Program.
